This student loan instruction page is intended for the parents of NSU students who want to fund their student’s educational experience by borrowing through the Federal Parent Loan for Undergraduate Student (PLUS) loan program.
If you are a dependent student at NSU, you should not be using this page.
For the purpose of determining PLUS Loan eligibility, a parent is a student’s biological or adoptive father or mother. The spouse of a parent who has remarried (stepparent) is also eligible to borrow a PLUS Loan on the student’s behalf if the stepparent’s income would be taken into consideration on the student’s Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). A legal guardian is not considered a parent, and cannot borrow through the PLUS Loan Program.
PLUS Loan applicants will have a credit check performed as part of this online loan application process. If this credit check indicates a favorable credit history, you will be notified of the loan approval immediately as part of this online process. Parents with an adverse credit history can have a PLUS Loan denied, and you will be notified of this denial as part of this online process. A student whose parent cannot obtain a PLUS Loan due to an adverse credit history is eligible for an increased loan amount through the Unsubsidized Stafford Loan program. Please contact NSU Student Financial Services at 1-800-722-9614 if you would like to find out more about the increased eligibility for the Unsubsidized Stafford Loan Program.
During this process you will be asked to print a paper copy of your PLUS loan application that will require your hand written signature. After signing the paper application, you should then mail the application directly to the lender address indicated on the form. Do not mail your completed application to NSU Student Financial Services, as this will only delay the processing of your PLUS loan.
